Benefits of cordless screwdriver

The cordless screwdriver is useful in many ways and in many settings. All you have to do is learn how to maximize its use.

When you are confronted with the grueling task of having to tighten up multiple screws, like forty or fifty screws, onto various surface areas and through different surface materials, a cordless screwdriver will spare your arms and hands from a potentially tiresome predicament. The cordless screwdriver with help you accomplish your task faster, without having to exert too much effort. Thus, this type of screwdriver saves you precious amount of time and energy. Aside from this, it is kind of fun to use this cool gadget.

One of the best features of the cordless screwdriver is its ability to turn in reverse. When you need to remove a worn-out screw, the cordless screw can also do this for you. All you have to do is position the tip onto the screw head, turn in reverse direction while putting some torque, and the screw will simply come out of the hole.

Buying a cordless screwdriver

Choosing a cordless screwdriver is not as easy as one might think. The heart of the problem is the huge variety in terms of models, power, batteries and pricing that confronts any person who’s looking to buy one. If you are thinking about purchasing a cordless screwdriver, below points will help you in coming to a decision which would be the best for you in your particular situation.

Use: What do you intend using it for?
Driving in screws, obviously, and/or backing screws out, or do you want to drill some holes as well? An active DIYer will have something else in mind than someone who really needs a tool like this just for the basics. Maybe you already have a cordless drill/driver? Why buy a screwdriver then as well? Obviously, your drill/driver can do everything a cordless screwdriver can do and much more, but a dedicated cordless screwdriver has benefits as well, making getting one in addition to your cordless drill/driver not such a bad idea at all. For one, your cordless screwdriver will always be more compact and light-weight and so much easier to use and will negotiate a tough little corner better than your bulky (and heavier) drill/driver. Clearly, for many jobs you do not need your 18V drill/driver and your 6V screwdriver will do just fine!

Budget considerations:
Whatever you intend using it for, your decision will ultimately be determined by what you have in mind paying for the product. Fortunately, you will have enough models to choose from in all the price ranges, as can be seen in comparison chart. The price variation in cordless screwdrivers is huge: The most popular cordless screwdriver on Amazon, the
Bosch IXO Cordless Screwdriver, sells at about £30, whereas the Dewalt DCF610D2 Sub Compact Screwdriver will cost you more than £95. Clearly one will have to compare these screwdrivers according to price ranges. It won’t make any sense comparing a screwdriver of less than £25 with one costing more than £100.

Voltage: If yоu wоrk wіth soft materials such aѕ wood, gо fоr а small 3.8-volt motor. But if yоu wоrk wіth heavy materials оr wоrk lоng hours gо fоr а 12 оr 14.4-volt motor. For constant usе – it’s better tо have а 18 volt motor.

Battery: Another attribute iѕ battery life between charges. Treat it aѕ а time saver, the lоnger the battery life the more time yоu save by nоt having tо recharge it oftеn. Screwdrivers that hаvе а longеr operating time cоuld bе better investments іn the lоng run. Some models hаvе а sеcond spare battery; sоme don’t – but pay attention tо the price fоr the spare battery – the price fоr аn extra battery cоuld bе just the sаme aѕ the price fоr the  screwdriver.

Size: Some оf them are vеry compact so, it iѕ easy tо store іn а small plаce аt home оr аt wоrk.

Weight: The weight оf а cordless screwdriver cаn bе crucial tо consider. While mаkіng а choice, just plаcе it intо yоur hand аnd try tо feel if it iѕ comfortable tо lift. When traveling, yоu cоuld carry it іn yоur bag оr а backpack. Also cоnsider а lightweight cordless screwdriver if yоu are always оn the move.

Speed: It iѕ always handy tо have options fоr speed. For example, hаvіng а slower speed wіll allоw the user bеttеr control аnd wіll improve the accuracy оf the wоrk.

Power of Cordless screwdrivers

How much torque do you need to drive in a screw? There’s no easy answer to this question. It depends on a number of things, like the diameter and length of the screw, the toughness of the wood you’re driving the screw into and whether you’re drilling a pilot hole or not. Understanding the concept of “torque” is in any case not that easy. How many people understand what something like 180 in.-lbs actually means? The good thing is that it really does not matter that much. Anyone will understand that a torque of 180 in.-lbs is much more than, say, 50 in.-lbs. You will also come to realize that you do not need that much torque for light screw driving jobs as is available in a powerful 18V cordless drill/driver.

Finally, do not make the mistake of comparing the torque produced by cordless screwdrivers with that of cordless drill/drivers. Torque of 500 in-lbs is quite common. On the other hand, the most powerful cordless screwdrivers produce “only” 180 in.-lbs! Torque of 20-80 in.-lbs is common in cordless screwdrivers, which looks ridiculous as compared to the power of drills. So this comparison does not really make any sense; cordless screwdrivers are quite capable of doing what is expected from them, even though their torque seems ridiculously low compared to that of cordless drill/drivers.

The power available in cordless drill/drivers is primarily for drilling and has to be managed very carefully (with the clutch settings) when driving in screws, or else you end up stripping each screw or snatching off the screw head (as I have done more than once!). On top of this using so much power when drilling small holes or driving in small screws is not a good idea. These drill/drivers are also so much heavier and bigger.

Ergonomics of Cordless screwdrivers

The screwdriver either has to be of the “pistol grip” type or has to have an articulating head or adjustable handle for negotiating an awkward angle. For this reason inline drivers not recommended. They work fine until you have to drive in a screw where the tool cannot be aligned exactly in line with the screw. On the other hand, they are very cheap and should be OK if you really don’t want to spend more than £20, but still have a tool that is better than an ordinary screwdriver.

Another useful feature of the cordless screwdriver is that it is equipped with a system that allows the user to quickly change the drill bits. This changing system does away with the fumbling and missing components, thus helping you save on time. Your cordless screwdriver that has this very important feature, otherwise, look for another model that has it, instead.

Different batteries of Cordless screwdrivers

  • Is the battery replaceable or not? If not, the life of the tool will be determined by the life of the battery. Under normal conditions your tool will outlive the battery and you can replace the old battery with a new one. However, some of these cordless screwdrivers are so cheap, that this is no real big deal. Just get yourself another new tool once the old one’s battery is no good anymore! Do you already have another cordless tool, like a drill, and would like to use the same battery or have an extra battery to use with your other tools of the same voltage? Obviously, you will then have to go for the “tool only” option, or buy one with a replaceable battery of the same brand as your other cordless tools.
  • What type of battery is used? Ni-Cad of Lithium-Ion? The cheaper cordless screwdrivers all use Ni-Cad batteries, which are not as good as the Lithium-Ion ones (but cheaper). The Lithium-Ion ones have many advantages of which the most important is the fact that it has no memory. In case you don’t know, this means it can be charged at any time (whether the power is low or not) and for any length of time as well, without any negative impact on the life of the battery. This is not the case with Ni-Cad batteries. They should only be charged when they are empty and then be charged until they’re full to prevent the negative impact of memory.
  • Number of batteries: Does the tool come with one or two batteries? If you get two batteries, the one can be charged while you’re using the other one.
